Title: Pen spinning
Post by: Dexterhunter on April 14, 2009, 06:22:42 PM
The art of spinning a pen or pencil in your fingers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UESQ9PUlheI#noexternalembed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UESQ9PUlheI#noexternalembed)
I can do the Thumbaround and Sonic. Its great thing to learn if you want to alleviate boredom in school, and amaze your peers. I got three kids into pen spinning at my school, it only takes the Thumbaround to amaze someone.

Title: Re: Pen spinning
Post by: YoPlayAgy on October 11, 2009, 06:25:32 PM
I used to penspin, but then it got boring...
Seriously, it is cool, but 20$ for a PEN? (The official brand pens)
And I don't like to waste like 20 gels every week.

It is fun, but there's less possibilities for tricks since you only use one hand.
You cant do grinds, whips, or anything...Which is pretty sad.
And yes, it is very hard.

I can do, Cam something combo, fingerpass, sonic, twisted sonic, reverse sonic, sonic 1.5 (!?), thumbspin 1.5.
     ^ THE COMBO IS IMPOSSIBLE!^

Buying pens and materials for pen modding quickly and easily gets more expensive than yoyos.

Yeah, I agree. It is VERY expensive for just a pen.

phhhhhh, 10 bucks for a pen and 100 for a yo-yo, and 475 for a butterfly knife, I hate my hobbies.

You don't mod a pen with just one pen.

My point is, penspinning is more expensive than yoyoing.

Title: Re: Pen spinning
Post by: yoyocon on October 20, 2009, 04:07:25 PM
actually i made a pretty good pencil mod that started me spinning. it only costs 2-3 dollars and i can make like 5

its just the pencil wrapped in duck tape with some more on the edges for weight

like i said tape is like 2 bucks for a huge role and i got a 12 pack of pencils for $1

i can now do thumbaround and sonic

Title: Re: Pen spinning
Post by: Thirsts on October 30, 2009, 11:27:19 PM
ya i modded some pens. my best mod is of two pens that i made into a double-sided pen whick has perfect weight distribution. but i havent been doing it lately because its really hard

I've been a penspinner for almost 2 years on and off before yoyoing.
I have about 8 pen mods that are pretty good.
I use a Dr KT =D

I have a large trick list:  ;D
thumbaround
thumbaround reverse
fingerless thumbaround normal and reverse
thumbaround extended
indexaround
indexaround reverse
fingerless indexaround
fingerless indexaround reverse
(etc. for all fingers)
Charge in any finger combination (T-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 badly 2-3, 2-4, 3-4)
Sonic inverse, reverse, harmonic any combination in any slot
Devil's sonic, demon's sonic
shadow in any finger slot to any finger slot
That's about all i got off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's more, and if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM, I know a bit about modding and such too. =)

i did pen spinning when I rested in yoyoing.I had a bictory as my main pen. and I can do tricks like sonic, thumbaround, back around, infinity, double infinity, index around, twisted sonic and devils sonic (sometimes). But now I'm back in yoyoing and I'm happy of it  O0

some ppl are supportive, but most are plain mean

-I'm a really good modder, a G3 person myself with expensive jap mods LMAO.
edit- I meant barely good professionally, "really" good compared to the rest of the world

-i'm ok at spinning, the hardest thing I could do is a demon sonic bust, palmspin and shadow. no real combos though
*Penspinning and modding is very expensive, like yoyoing

and I know a lot of professional psers like Eriror and Kam. they're cool to talk to on upsb xD

pen spinnings not hard, just takes lots of time. ive been spinning for a year now, and i can do just about every trick, but my combos suck, i usually copy other peoples combos like eriror or bonkura or shadowserpant.

lls that's what makes it "hard." you usually spend a lot or too much of time on it. I obviously did.

no and for ppl that don't understand it at all, it's just impossible. teaching it to them is a pain. trust me hahaha
IMO it's not bad at all, but finding all that time is kinda hard. plus not many really try to learn it cause it takes too long to learn a new trick (when new to psing). I didn't have so much trouble, but others really do.
and are you from upsb? cause shadow is mainly upsb.

There's plenty of time during school to pen spin, and it's not like you have to focus solely on penspinning to be proficient. Constant repetitions will help you get combos and tricks down, and that can still be accomplished while focusing more on other things like bookwork or to a video and such. And 4;eel24, not to be rude, but I doubt you can do just about every trick for just one year's worth of practice.

you can probably learn tricks easily after learning the basics

eh not really, not too much momentum
imo rsvp mx's/cx's are pretty good if you can't get a KT or waterfall

nothing in particular- if you can buy an rsvp and "back cap it," that'd work. A g2 is ok also, just not great.
rsvp mx's are always "the first pen," but imo the lemon and waterfall are much better. (although, I don't think a beginner can find all those pen parts =/)
if you're interested in making different mods, look at pen wish to find parts.

tricks, again nothing in particular, BUT you have to know some tricks in order to do others-
charge
sonic
thumbaround
fingerpass
infinity
(and their conjugates, i.e. their reverses and on other fingers)

anyone got a link to a good store where i can get a good pen at?

penwish or jetpens
penwish has premade mods already

hint if you want to make a mod right now by going to staples or something
back cap a pentel rsvp (you might need an extra grip)
an rsvp mx- you need a Pentel hgg and Pentel rsvp/sunburst. Problem- you can't really find hgg's in USA stores anymore...
an rsvp CX- you need two rsvp caps, two grips, and one rsvp body. Problem- you need a saw and/or drill
remember, you can always substitute parts.

if you really want a good mod- try and make a KT, Waterfall, or Lemon- see upsb(wiki) for details

Hey guys, I wanna try this too, what is a good pen for beginners? And do you guys know a store in europe that sells premodded (penspinning)pens?
If there is no good store in europe I have to order it from the us, so I can probably only order 1 maybe 2 pens so I need them to be good at any skilllevel

Edit: what about metal comssa or other comssa?

uh you can buy comssa's online. imo I prefer lemon over a metal comssa

and europe- you guys can make a couple mods actually (from the pens in your stores). There isn't a store that sells premodded pens. Only PDS and Penwish do that. I think there is a French pen-parts store online (or something of that nature). They could have premodded pens, but idk. I haven't used it.

a Finemax sounds like a new mod

and yeah a lemon is rather expensive- about $7
you get signo tips from "signo gel grips" at office depot. You'll use them frequently.
and busters are looked down upon in penspinning cause they're too heavy. A waterfall does the same thing and it's 5g lighter.  (penspinning pens get as heavy as 32g, but the normal max is 20g- a buster) I suggest you pick a lighter mod since you're just starting out.

Title: Re: Pen spinning
Post by: justink1025 on November 18, 2010, 09:34:58 PM
Well, finemax is basically comssa with airfit grip and metal tip.
Mr.Issac(not sure on the name) from pds made it for his tutorial on korean wepsite.
Anyways I am thinking of making mx,lemon and buy commsa.
Is the normal commsa and metal commsa have lot of defferences?
I heard commsa is little bit too light

wow to make your life easier
1- join upsb
2- get accustomed to the forum
3- go to the Trade forum to ask for an RSVP MX
or
look at the tutorials -pen mods and tricks- like yyn has for tricks
you will eventually learn -step by step- how to make pen mods. You can even ask questions if you don't understand something.

THE END
We assumed you already looked at UPSB. Pen mods aren't difficult to make if you look at the forum. WE CAN'T TELL YOU EVERYTHING ABOUT PENSPINNING on this LITTLE THREAD geez.

and how is it more expensive than yoyoing? once you get a good pen, would you need another one?

it isn't. and it is exactly like yoyoing- you might like some pens for certain things. You might not realize it now though.

I am going to make waterfall, lemon and rvsp mx. And bought pre made diamond metal comssa  ;D ;D
The waterfall might blow your mind... but not too much since you don't have that many mods to compare.

Im for now using a mechanical pencil with an eraser on one end and a pen cap on the other until my stuff gets here and im enjoying it. Its very hard though and i can tell its gonna take a while to learn. Tricks are difficult and i pretty much have thumb arounds down and working on some other stuff.

Are there any hgg tip/grip subs?

the new "RSVP RT"
the best sub you can find in the US

then Anyball/Profile
then G2
then 1 +1/2 of rsvp grip

for tips you could look for G-tecs at staples or signos

But sadly they forgot one signo so I won't have lemon for a long time :(

anyone got a link to a good store where i can get a good pen at?

penwish or jetpens
penwish has premade mods already

hint if you want to make a mod right now by going to staples or something
back cap a pentel rsvp (you might need an extra grip)
an rsvp mx- you need a Pentel hgg and Pentel rsvp/sunburst. Problem- you can't really find hgg's in USA stores anymore...
an rsvp CX- you need two rsvp caps, two grips, and one rsvp body. Problem- you need a saw and/or drill
remember, you can always substitute parts.

if you really want a good mod- try and make a KT, Waterfall, or Lemon- see upsb(wiki) for details
wait this is probably a stupid question but i know nobody that does this and i want to start. whats a back cap and do i need to buy off of penwish

heavier= better for learning, slower, smoother BUT more tiring
lighter= less tiring BUT faster, harder to control
some mods break this rule, like the waterfall or overground. Kam says he uses lighter mods during the day, and at night/home, he uses heavier mods.

imo, I just use med/heavy mods since my fingers are used to it

Umm...
I have sonic down consistently now and have had thumbaround for a loong time.
I am trying to make a combo where i do thumbaround and catch it between fingers 2 and 3 then doing sonic, but i can't eleminate the little pause between them. Any tips on how to do it faster?

Also, do you have any tips for someone learning charge?
I can do a single charge occasionaly, but never more than 1 at a time.

It's not a great pen mod.
Beifa Grips are hard to find (like really hard), and slick pen grips are in France =/
Just substitute if you want to make one, but it's not great or anything.

Uh do parts of the combos over and over again. If you do tricks as slow as you can, it helps you develop the trick smoothly, better, etc. Trust me.

(edit) - i.e. take it apart, repitition, etc. I'm pretty sure penspinning relies on mostly muscle memory and flexibility/dexterity.

So, I wouldn't buy anything special for beginner tricks...

That's not true. I'd recommend any RSVP mods for beginners, mostly cause it's better for you. It's not thick compared to markers or drumsticks. Far from it. And any penspinning pen is better than a pencil. (Unless the pen is too heavy for it.) It's NOT like how in yoyoing, "no other unresponsive yoyos will help you learn much faster" than the one you have. You need the momentum in "better" pen mods, which you DO NOT GET in a pencil.  O0

So getting at least something more than a pencil will help you learn faster (mostly due to the length and momentum aspect). However, if it isn't balanced, then use something else. =P

Hope this clarifies things.

I'm not saying that the RSVP wasn't a good pen, i was saying that it was too thick and short for MY preferences.

You can get any pen you want, but i think a pencil will get you through the basics like it did for me.

Did you back cap it with a grip inside the cap? It should be long enough.... Cutting the clip will help too.
sry I just get annoyed when people don't believe a psing pen makes it easier, making their own contraptions work, or that ligher pens are always "the way to go."

congrats on your double charging  ;D

I have been penspinning for about 1 1/2 years now and i can do a variety of the really hard tricks like:
Haitua, Twisted Sonic Bust x3, Triple Fingerless Thumbaround, Palmspin to fl Thumbaround, and other entrances into Haitua.
I mainly use a Buster CYL which is not recommended for beginner spinners due to its weight.
I have a selling thread on UPSB and if anyone wants to buy from me send me a pm there

I've thought about trying pen spinning out, just so I could give them away for x-mas this year.  Could someone suggest a good pen to begin with, and where to buy them?  I'm looking for a $20 price range, and I want one that doesn't really "need" mods, just so it's easier for my friends to pick up as well.

RSVP MX
Metallic Commsa

for the rsvp mx, just skip the inktube step
for the commsa, skip the "adding custom grips"

There! No cutting or drilling =D

Penspinning is probably the hardest thing I know.

FYI, you should check WHAT SUBS you're using. Impact RT's are waaay too heavy for an RSVP MX. It'll make the pen harder to spin. Try a (metal) Signo tip. HOWEVER, nothing compares to a Hybrid Gel Grip tip.

G2 grips don't look as good as the new RT RSVP grips IMO, but you could use either. Again nothing really compares to an HGG. It's fine though.

But all in all, try to make pen mods as close to the original as possible. It's kinda hard overall, but you could buy some of these pens off of penwish.

Title: Re: Pen spinning
Post by: dade on September 12, 2011, 11:32:12 PM
I originally thought the Impact RT tip would be too heavy as well, but after trying out a few other tips (all of which were way too small) the RT balanced the pen.  It's hard for me to explain, because I'm a complete noob at this, but the center of the pen is also the center of the weight.  Does that make sense?  Anyway, I had to make the mod out of what I could find locally, which is why I didn't use a Hybrid Gel.

That's true... but it doesn't really spin the same/balanced. It's kinda hard to explain.
-it could be me xD

And yeah, that tends to be the main problem in penspinning, you can't find over half of the pens locally.

I like the rushon double-capped mod, and the Marvy Marker mods, although they are pretty expensive.
some other viable options could be a G3 MX, Product Sc mod, MSXA and CK mod.

Yeah the rushon is good.

But he said no modding. Those require lots of modding. I would say "get a Seven or Kuzu," but those things require intense modding... he's just a beginner

If you're saying "get them pre-made by penwish," then yeah those are great options, except for the G3 MX and the MSXA (-a little).

If im not mistaken, a Dr. KT is pretty hard to make if you do the standard grip cut scheme, but you can ask Eric to cut them for you(owner of Penwish), same with the grips on comssas. An MSXA and CK mod (v1) are pretty simple to mod as well. CK v2 is a pain in the buttocks to mod, with all of the sanding and cutting and various parts you wouldn't have as a beginning modder. And a Dr. KT nor Waterfall are suitable for beginners either, if im not mistaken.+

No, lol I was saying those mods WOULD BE FINE if Dade was buying them pre-made. None of those mods are ok if he's not getting them from penwish premade. He does not want to make them himself anyway. I'm not sure if I'm being clear or not. The MSXA requires some sanding I'm sure, which is pretty time consuming to get it right. If not, you could break some Comssa caps.

Lots of beginners go to busters nowadays so I thought that a KT would be ok.... if he's getting it pre made. It does come with the ryo grip scheme anyway (when bought from penwish). He could just slip on grips. Yeah it is 20g, so it could be way too heavy for Dade.

And a waterfall is more than fine. It's only 15g and an MX is like 13g. What's wrong with that?  :coolsmiley:

Title: Re: Pen spinning
Post by: tamashii_00 on September 19, 2011, 03:32:06 PM
0_o i thought the MSXA was just 1. Make an RSVP MX back cap, 2. Put HGG grip on RSVP front of the body, 3. Screw HGG tip onto comssa cap, 4. Put cap onto front grip and back cap on the back. Well unless you ean sanding down the front of the RSVP, although its unnecessary, cuz i put them on slowly, to avoid any breakage; I have yet to break my MSXA ;D But making mods yourself is cheaper, but wont be as nice as pre-made, so it depends on Dade's budget on what he's gonna buy.

I was thinking about the Flying Panda mod on Penwish, which is an extended waterfall + signo tips. Quite an overkill imo. My bad lol.

And a waterfall and MX are fine. Nothing wrong there :D

There isn't much to do besides practicing a lot. The important thing is to make sure you're doing the tricks properly and you'll get them eventually!

Once you get a lot of tricks down, you can look for some recommended combos or slo-mo other combos. If there are tricks you don't know in those combos, go learn them!

Good luck! :D

I've been messing around with penspinning for probably about a year now; I don't have a ton of tricks down ( a couple Thumbarounds, Sonics, Charges, aerials and stalls) but I did figure out how to make a highly customizable and quite end-weighted pen from two RSVPs and two Round Stic Grips, with the option of a couple G2 grips for added weight. It can be made anywhere from a fairly normal pen size to over 30cm long. It's become my daily carry in class, and is barely short enough to fit my binder in my preferred model. I like my pens long and heavy because I have huge, strong hands.
