What makes a YoYo 888 so special and expensive?
« on: June 27, 2011, 01:49:43 AM »
How does it differ from a regular yoyo (Duncan Freehand Zero), and what's the difference between Premium 888 and DV888? :-|

It is a regular yoyo. It's just machined aluminum like many high end -------. The only difference between it and many other yoyos is that it had hubstacks which is kind of meh if you ask me. As for the differences between the 888 and the dv888 just consult product pages at the yyn store.

The 888 is a precision machined aluminum yo-yo designed for high-end play. The Duncan Freehand is a basic plastic ball-bearing yo-yo meant for intermediate play.

The 888 and DV888 are completely different body shapes....the 888 is a more rounded and refined body while the DV88 is more squared-off and simpler. The 888 has hubstacks, which Hollandyo doesn't seem to prefer.

The difference between any metal and plastic yo-yo is the precision and ability to hold tolerances. Plastic yo-yos will nearly always have some inherent amount of vibration, and will vary from one to the next while metal yo-yos from a reputable manufacturer will be incredibly consistent from one to the next, should possess no vibe or wobble, and be far more precise in their play characteristics.

Hope that helps.

888 defines smooth. I feel that people forget this... indeed one of the smoothest throws out there.

Odd considering the price was the same prior to that event.

Relative to other yoyos, it's not expensive at all. Most high-end aluminum yoyos cost between $80 and $120.

Blast finish, high grade alloy, triple bearing+  now in the pack with dvd, holder 2 main bearings+  spare axle and strings it could be argued it constitutes great value.

Are a lot of 888 runs blasted? I used to have an 888x that wasn't.

I dunno about that. My 888 is vibey compared to my super smooth Superstar (I only have two yoyos...I'm an unresponsive noob).

Back in the day... when Raiders were the choice throw for 1A (over 10 years ago, yeah I'm old)... metals were novelties, played horribly, and STILL cost $100+. To have a yoyo like the 888 priced around that range shouldn't be surprising. I got one and they're great.
