Back in the old days it used to just be the one-handed division and the two-handed division. They called them 1A and 2A, respectively. Everything made sense. Then people started doing crazy crap, and bringing it to competitions. So they made an X division, for crazy crap that didn't fit in 1A and 2A. Then more and more people started doing crazy crap, so they split the X division into quasi-convenient chunks based on the setups they required or something. And since they had 1A and 2A, and dual-wielding string-trick yoyos had come to be known as 3A, they just continued the pattern, or some rot like that. And now nothing makes sense.

Elephark is basically right.

For a little more detail, it all started back during Hawaii 99 when at Worlds single hand yo-yo was A and two hand was AA because two hand was the premier division (think minor league baseball or high school sports divisions).  Back in those days A was something you did when you weren't good enough to AA.  Then when AAA was more fleshed out they called it AAA as a joke to fit it in with the A designations both because AAA was a combination of A and AA and because AAA would be "better" than A or AA.  Then when Freehand and Offstring became full classifications they were arbitrarily given A designations as well (this was also treated as a joke by a lot of players).  Then came the combining A's (ie 13A) which is an even bigger joke than any of the earlier A designations.

Its actually spelled 'Eh', but I wouldn't expect a yank too know that.
