Mod Results from Worlds???
« on: August 09, 2012, 03:21:54 PM »
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the results from the Mod Contest at World's this past weekend.  Who won? Who took pics? What about the Iron Mods? Sooo eager to find out, hence all the questions.  ;D

Landon Blak won first place in both the mod contest and Iron Mod!  That guy's a beast!

Wow, that engraved yoyo is NUTS! Not dissing on Landon or anything because I adore his work, but just out of curiosity, what was the reasoning behind his placing higher than the engraved yoyo? Was it because he made it completely by hand instead of using a CNC machine for part of it? Seems like the engraved one would have been more difficult overall, CNC work notwithstanding.

Unfortunately yes these were the only entries.

I have a feeling that there was some miscommunication about turning in mods. The registration desk was not properly informed that they were the place to turn things in, so the entire first day they basically turned people away (apparently none of them bothered to read the program). We had it announced over the PA system several times, but I think some never got the message.

The dv888 got 3rd mostly by default.. we all kinda felt the mod made the yoyo worse since you couldn't take it apart without removing the stacks.

As for the placement of the other two..

Length of time for production has 0 influence on the score. The reasoning is simple.. just because you spend a long time, doesn't make it good.

The judging criteria is simple..

- Creativity/Originality
- Quality/Finish
- Playability

You can pull up the official rules for the score breakdown between categories.

So Landon's did very well in quality, it played great, and it was at least reasonably original.

The engraved yo-yo played kinda meh (somewhat center weighted), it was moderately creative in that lots of engraved yoyos have been done but this method was unique (though the method wasn't explained with the entry, we found that out later), and the quality was decent. It didn't take 2nd by very much (only a few points I believe), but it got edged out.

Guess you can't judge on looks alone... :-P Interesting to see what the thought processes were behind the decisions. That's a bummer that the mod submission got disorganized - I was really looking forward to seeing some awesome stuff.

There were also just less entries this year.. there weren't really any of the usuals from Japan.. hopefully next year will be much better.

I'm told that Shinobu was going to enter, but his entry was too complicated for him to finish in time. I'm absolutely stumped as to what the hell could possibly be too complicated for HIM to finish.

Didn't expect there to be so little entries, still, nice work.

Have the pics of last years contest been put online somewhere? I seemed to have completely missed it.
