Wood/metal hybrid yoyo
« on: July 27, 2012, 08:33:31 AM »
haven't been on much, but I got bored today and decided to work on the lathe.

It's made of black walnut wood that was grown on my grandpa's tree farm in rural Missouri. It's 54mm in diameter, 42mm wide, and really light. I'm going to put some aluminum rings on it tomorrow. It definitely wobbles, but it is playable, and I think some extra weight might smooth it out. A little cosmetic work to take off the rough spots would probably help too, and I can replace the thread inserts with others if need be.

I'm not sure why, but I'm really proud of this one. it's definitely not the best player I've made, but I like it.

what do you all think? Any tips or suggestions?

Charlie

EDIT:

I put the rings on today, although I broke one half while doing it. I'll make another one in the near future.

Does anyone else notice the advertisment links  :tickedoff:
I enjoyed a poptart, but instantly regretted eating the whole box.

Looks nice! I don't see any links... I think the rings could be a bit larger diameter so they blend better with the sloped edge of the wood, because right now the edge of the wood sticks up above the ring and that would annoy me to no end. But otherwise, I think that looks really nice!

I was going to sand it down.

I suppose that would be the simple solution... :D How much does a half weigh with the weight rings, and what are you using for a bearing seat?

Wouldn't it be cool if it had ti rings, and you didn't sand it down so people can't spark it, =D

Haha, all it would take to spark it is to throw it at a slight angle... :-P
