thats not all of them. ive got 2 stargazer v2 and 2 sleipnirs coming  :)

(and no, im not that interested in v1 44re:creation. the product control was WAY out of whack and have obviously since been improved)

Hey Heath, are you planning on getting the DreadnoughtG?

Perhaps you don't know what that is (I'm predicting that you do...), it's a 79g version of the dreadnought.

More info...it's Japanese.: http://throwdevice.jp/?pid=18966789 (http://throwdevice.jp/?pid=18966789)

Don't remove the link, mods. You guys don't even sell the product, and most of the people on here don't know how to add the yoyo in the cart.

HVizier, unfortunately the Clash has only been entrusted to me for long term safekeeping. I don't own it.

illusionz, I assume that's a Stargazer v2? beautiful pictures.
I consider the original Stargazer to be one of, if not THE best yoyos I've thrown. I'm curious to see how the v2 compares. The specs are nearly identical, but I wonder how much of an actual difference there is between the two shapes. I prefer the more rounded edges of the original Stargazer and Stardust over the newer angled shapes found on yoyorecreation's current lineup, but the new aesthetics are pretty awesome.

the angles on the v2 draw even less friction on hops and layers than the v1. it also plays MUCH faster and floatier. the v1 has more spin time though, and feels more solid

both throws are great, but for my style of play the v2 is a VERY obvious choice

i plan to do a compare/contrast review of both soon. i hope that helps until then

Well that stinks.  I wonder why they don't want more people to be able to play what seems to be a really excellent yoyo.

I think after that they went to the BirdinHand shop and then were sold out.  If I was at Nats i would have bought one.

with this statement, it would be fair to assume at least ONE event i didnt attend last year......lol
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: jeff s on February 23, 2010, 04:57:30 PM
.......that no one bought.

The Clash in my picture above came directly from Nationals (not Bird in Hand) and flown back to NYC so it's safe to say at least ONE was purchased there  O0. It would have been much cooler to attend 44 Clash and get it there but it's a long walk and swim to Japan.
It's a really awesome yoyo and you can play and do all the same tricks as any other throw, but it's pretty big and I can't see it as a practical daily thrower (Ryan@yoyonation would beg to differ). I imagine that the Dreadnought basically feels like a metal 4a yoyo. I have to use longer string on the Clash as shorter string throws off the proportions. It just feels weird. Chopsticks combos are fun.... breaking in a new bearing and having a yoyo that sharp and that size snap back and hit your hand is not.

Any one want to recommend me a good YYR?
I held kengo's YYR (donno which one) but it was pretty huge lol at TYYC last year.. btw, he's awesome.

yeah, I like regular sized, and not over..
the Messiah maybe?

The Messiah looks like a very solid throw. Unfortunately I've never tried it yet..

But I own a BB'ed Stardust 2 and you can't go wrong with it. Perfectly smooth and just..I don't know..perfect, I can't find any flaws in it.

like a slower, longer spinning, even more stable Dreadnought (refer to my review  :))

ive only had it for about 2 hours and ive already thrown a 9 1/2 minute sleeper with it  :-P

i hate sleeper contests

Stardust v2 Stardust v2
Dreadnought Sleipnir DreadnoughtG
Stargazer v2 Stargazer v2 Stargazer v1 Stargazer v2
Wow! Great collection!

Regarding the Adegle Sandglass, I've thrown one of these along with the Formosa and N23.5. Very nice yoyos, but they run VERY wide... similar to the original Turning Points. Of the three, I personally preferred the N23.5 over the Sandglass or Formosa, but they all play well.
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: Heath on February 27, 2010, 06:14:37 PM
the sandglass is 5mm short of formosa and turning point range, but i agree on the formosa, even though i hear its actually smooth (the turning point had vibe issues)

For now, all I've got is my Sleipnir!

damn! nice. i thought i was bad with 3 stardusts. you win! if you can get your hands on a Blink, you'll LOVE it. it's pretty much the next evolution of stardust. it's wider than both the stardust and stargazer v1, but it's the same diameter as the stardust v2. it feels weightless on the string and is the smoothest of all my YYRs. the weight is similar to the stardust, but the distribution of it feels a lot different. i haven't tried the E=MC² yet. it's the exact same size/ shape but it weighs heavier. i'm not sure how that would affect the play, but i'm perfectly satisfied with how the Blink plays and feels.
love your collection. love stardusts.  O0

No they arent.  How could you even tell?  The flat hub obviously gives it away.  The hubs on the stardusts aren't flat for one, and the rims of the stargazer v1 are more rounded.

Got to try it,
Few friends of mine came back frm 44clash with them, it plays surprisingly well for
something almost like a novelty item. Using Hspin size bearings i think.
Feels like holding a thick rod, VERY stable.

No, I meant not for sale, the question mark was expressing my confusion at joshhh's statement.  Seems like a jab at me?  Guess I was too nice to him, telling him who I sold my Peak to even after he screwed me over the first time on buying it.

I personally hated the dreadnought, just saying.

if i had $180 to drop on a yoyo though, It's probably be a YYR, most likely a Messiah. that thing, is excellent. Expensive as hell, but excellent.

We expect Overdrive reviews from those of you who just ordered these.

I like the changeup on the look and I expect they play very much like a Sleipnir... considering how the Sleipnir plays I suppose the Overdrives play lovely.

Looks very very different from a Sleipnir...I'd expect play to be closer to a Stargazer v2.

                         yyr-stargazer    yyr-sleipnir    yyr-overdrive
Weight (g)    64.0            65.0            65.5
Width (mm)    42.00            43.00            44.00
Diameter (mm)    54.00            57.00            59.50

..info from that other site. I'm curious how the specs will match up with the feel. Also, the Overdrive has the sharpest profile out of these.

The specs aren't reflective of the weight distro, which I expect to be VERY different.  Sleipnir wasn't light.  Stargazer was light.  Plus, I've read somewhere that it plays somewhat like one.

Julian, I am so curious what these are going to turn out like.. hopefully it will not drive me to want to do the same. I am split between liking my YYR's solid metal look and how clean the lines of the design appear vs. getting them custom ano'ed. Lately I've been thinking it would be ill to get my gold Stargazer v2 blasted and done in the solid green of the CLASH (if anyone has that color).
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: ratfacedudeguy on July 20, 2011, 12:19:10 PM
Lime green Stargazer would be so tight dude. And honestly if I lived where you do, I'd want all my throws beadblasted as I imagine if the yoyo even comes into contact with your hand/arm/whatever the spin is pretty much done for. If Jason wasn't booked full for the next few weeks I'd say go PM him right now.

The Dreadnought is going to be a solid color, so it'll still have the simplistic value to it. But yeah man, I'm super excited for them as well. I'll definitely post up pics when they're done -- hopefully by then I'll have a Sleipnir to squeeze into the group shot.
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: beezy on July 20, 2011, 03:42:16 PM
Yup, even inside with AC it is too humid + with sweaty hands I burn through highlights. Maybe the upside of non-blasted YYR surface is that it forces me to be more accurate. The Stargazer loses spin so quick with any contact and if I'm way too sloppy I just have to switch to the blasted DreadnoughtG...

...ahh, but yes.. blasted lime green stargazer...

Its a bead blasted Dreadnought and I'm absolutely loving it.  I'm a pretty big fan of undersized H-shapes, but this thing has completely changed my mind about super-over sized yoyos.  I'm actually thinking about getting that new monster from Crucial after playing this thing.

I'm so glad you're enjoying that Dreadnought as much as you are, Nick. The Dreadnought converted me from and undersized to an oversized fan too.

Jason Wong should be getting back into town today, so he'll finally be getting my yoyos and hopefully I'll be reunited with my Dread and Overdrive soon. Updates and pics coming when they come.

Wow!  Those polished engravings look beautiful!

Julian, I'm absolutely loving the Dreadnought.  I still can't control the thing perfectly, but I'm getting there.  I've already learned 3 or 4 new tricks with it that I'd had a lot of trouble learning with some of my other yoyos.  It doesn't top the CODE1 for me, but only because the two can't really be compared.  I do know that I'm going to throw this thing until it can't spin anymore.  I can't afford to get too deep into YYR collecting, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for any beat-to-hell YYRs on the BST.

Not sure if I've even seen one in this thread, but you guys seem to be the experts on all things YYR, so I've been wondering, how does the CLASHcube play? Is it more than just a gimmick?

Got some pics for you guys. I'm probably gonna re-shoot them in better quality because my cell phone sucks...

First off, the Dreadnought and the Overdrive. So glad to finally be reunited with these guys. Nick and Jason did such a fantastic job on them. They seriously play just as good as they look.

Nice, dude. Both the Dreadnought and Overdrive look ace but I do have to say that for YYRs I prefer solid colors because the lines of their shapes are so clean. That purple Dread looks like velvet. Speaking of Overdrive, I just joined the club (thx to Sunny). Julian, it's your fault, hahaha. So far I am totally digging the Overdrive and it does indeed play like a giant Stargazer v2.. to my surprise.

And oh yeah.. I noticed how when re-selling YYRs people often mention marks near the bearing seat. I think it might have to do with how they are anodized. It's a tiny raw spot next to the response groove and is on all YYRs that I've seen.

Overdrive ftw i kinda feel like the gazer v2 plays that extra gram heavier than the overdrive, anyone feel me on this? i really dont find their play too similar...

Well that's true it's just that both throws are the exact same weight. The Stargazer v2 ends up being more dense and has a higher concentration of weight on that very outer rim which gives it a more powerful spin than the Overdrive. Initially I was expecting more of a Sleipnir-type feel from the Overdrive but the Overdrive is its own animal. It has the same lightness of the Stargazer v2 on the string and it's just as fast but the Overdrive feels super light in the air, and by comparison to both the Sleipnir plays slower and more deliberately.

What I like about the Overdrive is that it's big but not too big and is a great weight for the size. Large and light is a nice combo when there's enough rim weight.

The clash cube is very stable like you said and it has a sleep time like a sleipner or a messiah. You do not need to worry about sleep time it is very good and worth getting.

Kengo Kido has b grades. If you went at worlds and asked him he would of showed you the b grades he has for sale. They play just like a grades really no difference.  B grade yoyorecreation yoyos do not have the b grade symbol like yoyojam or yoyofactory. You can not tell if they are b grade or a grade. Most of it is cosmetic stuff.

One YYR for every finger on each hand. May I suggest the Messiah on the pinky and Dreadnought for the thumb?

Make a video: one YYR on each finger, throw with BMF playing on the soundtrack.

Got my first YYR today. A green Clash. Amazing throw. Seriously so good. Was almost hoping it wouldn't be so good since the thought of paying such exorbitant prices for other YYRs is a bummer.. Damn exchange rates. Thinking about picking up either an Overdrive or Sleipnir next. Can anyone compare the two to each other and the Clash? Possibly the H5 as well since i own one. Afraid the Overdrive might be a little redundant since i already have two over-over-sized throws, but i also love light yoyos and the weight looks amazing. Glad i finally discovered what all of the hype was about.  :)

Welcome to the dark side Nathan

Trust and believe, adding another oversized throw to your collection will be anything but redundant. While the H5 does have that same huge presence on the string, it's way different from any oversized YYR I've played and each YYR does have its own completely unique character.

The Overdrive is the same diameter as the Clash, but since the weight is so much less and what weight it does have is so extremely rim-concentrated, it's a completely different beast. I feel like it's less solid and more agile than the Clash. The Sleipnir plays similar to the Overdrive because of the equal weight, but since the weight is more concentrated because of the smaller dimensions, you'll have a more solid presence on the string, which can make it easier to control. Also if it's a huge concern for you, the Overdrive seems to have a small "presence" vibe -- you know, one that doesn't get in the way of anything but just lets you know it's there.

So at the risk of using obscure, vague descriptors, my experience with each of these may be summed up as so:
-Clash: solid, powerhouse, mega-stable
-Overdrive: soars, super fast, agile
-Sleipnir: zippy, great all-arounder, "middleman" in comparison with the Clash and Overdrive

By the way, I'm interested as to what year model Clash you got. Is yours beadblasted or straight anoed?

Awesomely helpful stuff! Thanks so much! Sleipnir sounds like it might be more my style, but i'll see. As for my Clash i believe it's the 70g pre-2011 version, the seller wasn't sure. The finish seems to be some sort of light blast and not straight shiny ano, but i'm not sure what that means. Here's a few pictures:

Yooooo... After those Acrophobias get put through their paces I'd love to hear the lowdown (comparison, etc) on how they play. Interesting that the weight isn't pushed further to the outer edge. Dat width.

Wow. I was really going to try and avoid this term, but "floaty" is what most comes to mind when I'm throwing the Acro. What I mean by that is for me it tends to have a very soft, delicate feel on the string and responds to momentum changes very smoothly. Buttery almost. I was also interested by the weight placement as well. My guess is that they did that because if it was pushed any further out you'd have a mega wobble. But it definitely makes for a super unique weight distribution, and it's insanely comfortable for me. I compared it side by side with my Stargazer, Sleipnir and Overdrive, and honestly YYR has once again amazed me with their ability to make completely different beasts out of pretty minor design tweaks.

I don't want to take out the pads and then try putting in sili, having it not work, cleaning out the sili, and not having any pads then D:

You should be able to tell, the thin pads are SUPER thin and the deep one's are pretty deep. Plus if they turn out to be deep, you could probably just stick the old pad back in and have it work fine.

I believe that particular run used the thin pads, in which case it will not accept silicone. I've gotten K/CBC Pads to work in a pinch, but if you want the real deal, you'll have to set your sights overseas. My personal recommendation is IrPads O0

Hey guys, is anyone having any trouble with the latest YYRs?

A very disturbing disclaimer has popped up a couple of days ago, just when a friend of mine was having some troubles with his Acrophobia, that was vibey from the start and turned wobbly after being unscrewed.
In the mail exchange that followed it turned out that Acros, E=Mc2s and Blinks may present this kind of problem. Both my Acrophobia and E=Mc2 are fine, so I was wondering if my friend just got unlucky or there is, indeed, a problem... :-\

I've unscrewed my Acro plenty of times with no problems. I did see that disclaimer too which leads me to believe that they've experienced a higher return rate hecause of these issues. Very puzzling and pretty troubling indeed...

if it's the exact same one as my clear ano Messiah it's deep. I think one of my halves is actually running on silicone right now. (got it that way.), and my thick NOT IrPad (if you know what I mean.) fit perfectly into the other half.

Or take a needle and put it on the edge of the pad to se how deep it goes, but please dont stick the needle through the actual pad that would probably be a sad day if it started to rip.

I just read this "disclaimer" I can understand the whole " Formula 1" thing  but for the price don't you think they could make the bearing seat less tight??  I mean for the price you pay this is very disheartening.  I just received a Messiah and the first thing I did is put in a new bearing.  It was the hardest bearing to remove I have ever dealt with.  I took my time and went very slow.  The bearing seat was not changed in any way and when I screwed it back together it played fine and was (and still is) very smooth.  This makes no sense to me why they would say this???  I understand that they are the "Formula 1" of the yoyo world but when a company like One Drop can design something like side effects where you can take apart the yoyo over and over again with no problems I would think the "Formula 1" company could figure this out and fix it.  I have two yoyojokers and the bearing seats are perfect on them not tight and not loose.  And they are both smoother than my messiah.  Go figure.  I love my Messiah but this news will keep me from ever spending close to $200 on another YYR.

Now that's a problem that I haven't experienced. I can actually wiggle the bearing off the seat by hand on at least 1 or 2 of my YYRs, but then again I guess it depends on what kind of bearing you're using. The Asian KKs they ship with now are a pretty good middleground as far as tightness goes, but authentic Dif KKs tend to have pretty tight inner races, and Center Tracs... pshh fugeddaboud it.

Both my messiah and dreadnought had a very slight vibe to them, i mean very slight, which what you are prolly talking about here. i just tefloned half the axel and tuned it, and they both came out dead smooth.. and im very particular on my smoothness. i mean they just sit their on finger grinds and spin.. but i know what you mena exactly.

A friend of mine from China said that YYR moved their manufacturing to China.

It was claimed in this thread that they don't come with genuine KKs, but China-made KKs now.

Nah man, the kk bearings that they come with are definitely real bearings with real concave grooves cut into them, but they are for sure not "real" (genuine) Dif KKs. Honestly, I prefer the Asian replicas.

As someone who drops their bearings into dirty floor corners a lot, I actually like the super tight bearing seats. I can get them off gently with pliers, (gently), and the stock bearing is awesome, so I really never have to take them out.

Exactly, why would the prices go up for being manufactured in China?

Because the Yen is hitting all time highs to the US dollar.

Let's pretend for a sec that YYr has gone to China (I don't believe they did, of course), why that should have affected the prices?
Labor costs are incredibly cheaper in China, even more if compared to Japan. Plus international payments are usually made in $, and that should make outsourcing even more profitable for them...

Back on topic...

I just read this "disclaimer" I can understand the whole " Formula 1"

I don't understand it, instead. As you pointed out bearing seats have to be just right. Not loose, otherwise the yo-yo will have a vibe, not too tight, otherwise you will have problems cleaning/changing it.
I wish I had the support of other manufacturers as well, other than the ones I know and discussed this issue with, but the different experiences reported here can be explained in a few ways.
IE tolerances weren't calculated properly while projecting the yo-yo or the machinist wasn't able to respect that tolerances. Or the bearings may have different tolerances that the ones considered during the designing process and so on. Anyway, all these scenarios does not fit to my idea of Formula 1...

Anyway, i don't like that disclaimer one bit. It sounds like that they had production problems with the latest run, and trying to lower the return rate at the expense of their customers. Something like "the yo-yo is perfectly fine, it's you who don't have the skills to make it work as it should". Come on, it's a toy, not rocket science!

I truly, truly hope that I was wrong in my ill thinking, that this was just a passing mistake, that YYR will sort things out with customers who ended up with a faulty yoyo and keep on making some of the greatest yo-yos money can buy.

well talking about bearings, in my gleipnir the other day, my bearing pretty much died, like literally, the bearing was not spinning at all, i just put some one drop lube on it and it brought it back to life, but i still don't feel it spins as long as it first did.. not sure if this means anything at all because they cant make every bearing perfect, but just thought i would throw this out their. i still love my yyrs and they are all great performance throws.

For any of you guys with reservations on the whole vibe matter, last night I randomly decided to finally put some teflon tape on my Overdrive's axle. As you guys probably know, the Overdrives came with a nice little vibe on them, I'd say about comparable to newer CLYW. After the teflon taping... Dead smooth guys, not even kidding. No tuning necessary either. I tried it on my Dreadnought too, and while it was already super smooth, it just pushed it to the next level. I'd encourage you guys to do the same with yours. I'm gonna do the rest of mine tonight after work.

I just ordered my Gleipnir.  There are a few in the YYN bst threads, but most sellers say they don't really wish to sell the ones they've listed - a fact reflected in their near-retail prices.  I was glad to pay full retail for mine, and to select blue for my color.

Anyway, based on the specs and reviews, I am really excited to give it a throw!

The silver Sleip is sold and shipping monday, and the blue is on hold...no interest in the E or Acro, though, oddly.
The Acro and E are the best I've played from YYR so far.  By a long shot.

Well, not much has been said about the E or Acro other than that they are good (I'm sure they are) but it would be helpful to hear more on how they play.

Acro is a very different throw IMO. i have thrown alot of the yyrs and the acro feels fairly wide, but not in a bad way if that makes sense ha.  its also fairly floaty. Speed wise, it isnt super fast, but not slow or anything all in all just another good solid throw from yyr.

They've been making them in China for a while, far as a Chinese player who's in the local club says.
Reputable source, he knew that the TP yoyo's were also made in China and apparently, so are higher-end YYF's.

And no, there is no expected drop in the price range.

Anyone else notice they're gradually putting more thickness in the rims?

First you had the Sleipnir-type rims, then the Blink and E=MC ², now this. Eventually they'll just be completely filled in. and what's up with that hole in the side?

What of the C3 yoyos, then?  Do they not have this "distinct" anodization you're talking about?
A Chinese bootleg may not have this ano quality, true.  However these are direct YYR Products, not something from a company willing to produce filth just for the sake of a buck.

At the same time though, the 6's diameter is quite small so the rims are disproportionally sized to offset the feel of an overly small yoyo I imagine. Also, the hole in the side would be a design trait to further minimize center weight. I'm definitely stoked for the 6 to hit full production, whenever that may be.

I think that's only for the smaller yoyos they have released, IE Clashcube, E=mc^2, Blink (not so much), No. 6. Not the messiah because that is an older YYR. But if you look, the Classh 2011 and the Overdrive have thin rims.

Other than Heath, has anyone tried both Stargazers (or one of them?)

Which one would you recommend? I know the V1 has an axle problem, but I WOULD rather pay to re-thread the V1 than pay to blast and to anodize a V2 (unless it's a rose one).
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: ratfacedudeguy on December 11, 2011, 09:40:48 AM
They're two completely separate beasts. The v1 Gazer that I had was actually probably more fun for me to play than my v2. The v1 has this.... I dunno, bouncy type of feel to it and it makes a really distinct sound while spinning. I believe the v2 is a better player overall just for the simple fact that it's straight business. So really for me the decision comes down to choosing between a fun throw or a serious, albeit better all around (from a competing standpoint) throw.

I don't really know anything about them but I lol'd and turned my nose up in disgust when the guy selling them was like "you can't even tell the difference from the original" and I could tell right away even if I hadn't already known they were knockoffs. If these guys have been around for a while it's no wonder prices have been climbing, what with having to make up for lost profits and such. I urge anyone thinking about buying the knockoffs to reconsider. I know I won't ever be caught dead buying that junk.

Often times collectors will have a different approach to yoyoing than someone who is only a player. From a strict player standpoint, no it doesn't make sense to have duplicates, or at least not to this degree. But from a collector's standpoint it makes perfect sense to have every color variation for that particular model, or in the case of the rose Stargazers, multiples of a limited colorway in a finish that is no longer offered by the manufacturer (beadblast). If I had the means to do so, I would do the same thing.

I'm pretty sure that was just a scratch that was put on it by the original owner, and was not present at the time it left the factory because I've never seen another one with the same kind of mark. I'll put a note in there.

I've got an Overdrive that has the same machining mark in the gap, which is why I'm hoping it happens to authentic one's too. I gotta get a scale though.

Here it is.

The two Overdrives are actually bootlegs and the bottom left hand Sleipnir is currently packed and ready to be shipped to attybud.
So that brings my collection down to 5 YYR's :)

Definitely the best Clash yet in my opinion. I'll tell you the same thing I've told everyone else about it -- the 2012 takes everything that was great about the 2010 and makes it even better. The gap is perfectly balanced for a smooth unraveling on a throw and consistently tight binds while of course avoiding being too thin to the point of snagging. It plays lighter than the 2010 as well while still holding the same power and momentum. And to top it all off, mine is dead smooth. If anyone is thinking about picking one up, I will not hesitate at all to give it my full recommendation. Instant favorite status for me.

The Grape-Gazer

Sunny (Kevin) had a fine raw Stargazer V2 in his BST a few months ago.  I inquired, only to find he'd sold it.  Last week, SwatNoodle (Lucas) listed a polished raw Stargazer V2.  Thus, Sunny's/SwatNoodle's Gazer made it to me, after all.  SpottedBanana (Alice) and JasonWongZero applied the delicious grape ano.  Beautiful work.

YYR will not be making any more Stargazers.  I am lucky for the privilege of preserving this one in my Top 40 case.  Occasionally, I'll enjoy that play-satisfaction unique to YYR - and the Gazer's own cool quirks.

I hear Third Impacts were are the best YYR out there. It's a pity they're never going full-scale production.

Yep that would indeed be a Jealousy ;D

By the way whoever said Jealousies "weren't that good" were totally lying to you man. I absolutely love it. Perfect bounce at the end of the string and on binds, light and zippy without getting out of control like the Overdrive tends to do at times. It's a masterpiece if you ask me.

I will also agree that the Third Impact is one of, if not the best YYRs ever released. I only had the pleasure of throwing one on loan for about a week, but I'd really love to get my hands on one permanently, as anyone who's paid attention to my signature would surely know.

Sleipnir! the perfect yoyo! just can't get enough of this throw!!
Messiah, excellent throw, maybe a bit heavy for my taste.
Acrophobia, not tested yet.

But actually, any YYR yoyo is just a beast O0

Going by my prefs, Messiah. Soooo awesome. I love the feel.

But my prefs are extremely biased. I love solid, heavy, fast throws, and I hate anything that's light at the end of the string.

Gleipnir > Sleipnir
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: ratfacedudeguy on February 22, 2012, 09:35:15 PM
Well since we're all giving blind recommendations here, for a first YYR I usually recommend the Sleipnir. It's just big enough to get you acquainted with an oversized throw, as YYR does best. It's also a great all around throw and will get you used to having to pay attention to your throw as it's not nearly as forgiving on a bad throw as rounder shaped yoyos, and even most other YYRs. The only downside is that of the models you listed, the Sleipnir is the only one that's not in stock at stores that ship to America right now. It shouldn't be too hard to find one on the BST though, as I would consider it probably the most common YYR model in our particular community.

One thing that has been my general experience with YYR though is that their yoyos will take what you think are your preferences, and not only challenge them, but squash them into oblivion. I can't stand undersized and mini throws generally but I love the Messiah and ClashCube. I thought I generally preferred lighter, wider throws but the Clash which is a heavy, relatively thin yoyo ended up being my all time favorite. Of course your mileage may vary on this, but I haven't tried a YYR yet that I haven't loved, and I've tried 'em all except the Stardust 2 and the 6.

^Yea, and the newer Sleips (New Logo) are actually a tad lighter, so they're a little more easy to move around.  Personally, I like the older Sleipnir.

Sorry I should of mentioned what I like in a yoyo ;D

I normally prefer Oversized 56mm and up... I love the Dreadnought, but its just a tad too big, which is why I like the acrophobia.
The Messiah caught my eye because of how small, yet heavy it is. sounds bad ----.
and like you all said the Sleipnir sounded the most accessible of the bunch. love the specs though.

...eventually i will own them all ;D

also I have owned a Stargazer and Stardust back in 08 when they were still 44:recreation, I love both of them then.

Have you considered a Clash then? Just a couple millimeters smaller than the Dreadnought and lots of heft to it while completely avoiding feeling like a boat anchor. There are plenty of 2012 Clashes in stock at overseas retailers and it's seriously the most badass throw I've ever played.

I'm still kinda new to YYR. I've only thrown an overdrive (which I love), a sleipnir (decent, but idk), and a messiah (a little heavy for it's size for me). I'm not sure what all I'd like. I'm loving the overdrive, but I'm hesitant to buy one since they are so much, and there's no guarantee that I'd like it. I guess I'll stick to BST trading to get mine, but I'd love to try out an acrophobia.
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: ratfacedudeguy on February 23, 2012, 11:39:16 AM
Well you did say that you love the Overdrive right? Or is that the bootleg? If you're using the bootleg as reference, I can tell you that you're talking about two completely separate beasts, and I'm sure the original would blow your current perception of it away. The good thing with newer YYRs is they hold their resale value pretty well, so if you get it and aren't feeling it you can probably find someone who will do an even trade with you provided you keep it in perfect condition. That goes for the Acrophobia as well which again would probably be easier to get ahold of because they're still in stock at some retailers.

Acrophobia's are awesome, miss mine. Really hollow feeling, but still has string presence, idnno, hard to describe, but I loved it.

**I'll take a picture of my remaining two YYR's when I get one back from blasting.
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: beezy on February 23, 2012, 10:07:56 PM
for a first YYR I usually recommend the Sleipnir.

I agree with this ^^

The Sleipnir is very fast and has a great feel on the string. I feel spoiled every time I throw it or the Overdrive because they are both quicksilver fast and (dare I say?) floaty. They are just exciting yoyos to throw. For reference I like hop tricks, chopsticks and have big hands.. so there's that.

On the other end of my YYR experience is the 2010 Clash and DreadnoughtG. Both have powerful spins, very deliberate momentum, and an extremely solid feel. Great throws, more forgiving, and better for big move tricks like Eli Hop combos.

Then there's the Stargazer. Sometimes I love it, sometimes it is underwhelming. To me it is like the Sleipnir but denser, more deliberate, and smaller. I can easily see how some would prefer this over the Sleipnir (but not me!).

The overdrive that I have is a real one. I did have a bootleg as well, but I gave that to a friend. The Acro is something I really want, but I really love my overdrive as well. I've used a real sleipnir and a real messiah, but I prefer the overdrive.

Oh that's right I forgot that you have that Overdrive now!

And beezy, I absolutely agree with your take on the Stargazer. I recently put a tight fitting 10 ball kk in there which is a different make from my usual ones, and for the first time I can say that my Stargazer has achieved total smoothness, so it's seeing more play time than it was before. But you're completely right -- some days I love it, other days it's just kind of boring.

Not at all. The Gleipnir has a much softer landing at the bottom of the string and in my opinion fills out the hand just right. A very gliding-type feel on the throw, whereas the Messiah zips around with heavy authority. You can feel the weight on the Messiah a lot more because it's so mufh more dense and compact. My obvious preference is the Gleipnir by far, but that stems from my affinity for larger throws. I will tell you this, the first time I threw the Gleipnir, I said to myself "wow, I should have gotten one of these sooner."
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread

I was wondering, since I love my Gleipnir so much.

I like BvM's, and heavy stuff. So I thought I would like the Messiah.

Can anyone compare an E=MC2 to any of these throws?
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: ratfacedudeguy on February 24, 2012, 10:34:40 PM
E=mc2 is sort of like the Messiah in that it's a smaller denser throw, but the extra couple millimeters both ways makes a big difference. It's got a great bounce to it, and it's easily the most powerful throw I've ever experienced in that size category. Both ones I've owned require a bit of tuning, or haphazard unscrewing and rescrewing, but once you hit that sweet spot it's very smooth and an absolute blast to throw.
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: 888alltheway on February 24, 2012, 10:44:50 PM
The size of it seems like it'll fit me the best out of all the YYR's currently available.

I like slightly undersized and heavy. I'm guessing Blinks are faster and don't spin as long?

Man, I have to find myself an E=mc2 or Messiah. I'm geting a Leviathan2, so I guess I'll track someone down and trade for theirs.  :-\
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread

I'm guessing Blinks are faster and don't spin as long?
That's basically right, though I found the difference in general spin time to be pretty negligible. They both command pretty much the same authority on the string, but the E=mc2 has a bit more of a recoil bounce because of the increased weight (which I like; others may not) and it's a little bit more solid and deliberate feeling.

There are Messiahs in stock at an American-friendly overseas retailer now, so you can definitely have that one in the bag if you decided to go for it. I would personally stick it out and try and find an E=mc2 on the bst, but that's just me. If you like a really dense and ultra-solid throw though, you'd probably be just as happy with the Messiah.

The E=MC^2   has more thunk on the string, where as the messiah is a lot zippier. The messiah does feel a bit small for my liking. I also didn't enjoy the e=mc^2 much after the honeymon period...

My Messiah and E=MC2 share equally 80% of my daily carry time.  My Sleipnir occupies the remaining 20%.

The E=MC2 strikes me as one of the best yoyos ever made.

The Messiah baffles me with it's power, stability, and stamina - matching levels of any larger YoYo, by any company.

Both are engineering marvels.

One more note:   I threw my first Acrophobia today.  Whoever denies the existence of floatiness has never thrown an Acrophobia.  Brilliant machine.

Respectfully,
B

Hey, I guess I'll bring this thread back to life with the announcement of a new YYR.

The Maestro- the signature 4a yoyo of Naoto Okada.

I decided this would be the best place for asking sense i cannot find much in the BST. I want to buy some yoyorecreation again for competitions. I am a 3a player obviously so i would prefer a set but will accept individuals. Prefer bigger yoyo of size. (stargazer sliepnir CLASH overdrive etc.) But im open to pretty much anything as long as the price is not through the roof. Thank you! ありがとう!!!

Yea, it's like trying to find a mint pair of OG painted peaks to use for competition (okay, not THAT hard)

Finding a PAIR is extremely hard. And the new and old logo Sleips have different weights too :D Just thought I would say that.

Well if you want to go the easy route there is another American store that has Gleipnirs and 2012 Clashes in stock right now. It's not all that hard though to find a 3A pair on the bst every once in a while though. I know someone who very recently had a pair of Overdrives , so they're out there. You just have to stay on your toes.

I have the same question.  If I knew the first thing about off-string play, I would rush to buy one.

As more and more 4a players handle the Maestro, throne they will give us their thoughts - particularly whether the Maestro's performance rivals that of it's metal YYR counterparts.

Grabbed a silver Shinya Kido Sleipnir a couple days ago. You know, the one with Sleipnir on it. The delivery system in Japan is seriously efficient, so I've already got it.

I was thinking that this new run was actually old stock, because they seemed to get very few of each, but I think it's all new stock. I have the same version Sleipnir, but in pink and it's older, and the engravings differ between the two. The font sizes are different, as are the actual words. Observe:

Old Sleipnir - yoyorecreation meets 2009 World Champion Shinya Kido

New Sleipnir - yoyorecreation 2009WorldChampion shinyakido

Wonder what the deal is...

I got a request to take a picture of the old and new engravings, so I'll do that in a bit. NOW:

Sorry for the mega pic and the low quality. I think it's actually not too bad for a phone picture. Also, there was dust on the yo when I took the picture. Sorry about that.

I went to Rewind today and talked to one of the owners briefly about this. He said the changes were intentional. I didn't ask why, but I assume it might have something to do with staying ahead of the counterfeiters. He confirmed that the restock of YYRs are made in Japan. I was concerned about it, which is why I asked, and I assume some other people were too. I just thought I'd pass that on.

They have a fake Christopher Chia Sleipnir in the office (which everyone lovingly refers to as "Fake That") and I saw it today. The difference between a real Sleipnir and that thing is noticeable immediately if you've spent any decent amount of time with the real thing.

Also, played with an Overdrive today. Man, that thing is great. Really would love to get my hands on one of those. If anybody has one they would like to trade, I can order from the YYR website. Just thought I'd mention that.

Oh, while we're here, here's a picture of my meager YYR collection, and some other stuff that happened to be around:

Haha that's Bud's old fake Sleipnir that he sent to them after a certain ex-forum member tried to rip him off! Glad to know they still have it on hand for comparison purposes. My guide is one thing, but actually being able to physically handle it is an invaluable tool to keep yourself aware of what these fakes are like. You're lucky man, I wish I could go to Rewind's store...

Accompanied my friend to Tokyo to make sure he got on the right train to go back to the airport. Stopped by Spingear and copped this guy before I made my way back to Shizuoka. Outlet Acrophobia. Most of the outlet stuff I tried was a bit too egregious for my tastes, but a dude named Iida at Spingear helped me put together a great one. Plays just as well as any of my other YYRs. It just happened to cost ¥10,000 instead of ¥14,800. I can handle that. Plus, the colorway is pretty dang cool too.

I have found one counterexample of that. The blue in my Sleipnir is definitely a different shade than my Overdrive. The Sleipnir is a bit brighter than the Overdrive's royal blue shade. Also, now that I think about it, my old e=mc2 was a bit more pastel than my Acrophobia's rosy shade of pink. But you're right about the gold's perfect consistency. Definitely a good look.

For the longest time during my collection building spree it was teetering between $192 and $195, sometimes even higher on a bad day. At that point especially when buying multiples, $190 flat would have seemed like a good deal.

Looks like Fragment is up on the YYR store.

Just got an email about it.

It doesn't look like my cup o' tea, but maybe I'll get one just to make you all jealous. Ah, the occasional perks of living in Japan. ;) Or... Can you order from the YYR site from anywhere in the world?

You know, I went back to Heath's pic of his YYR Case and, you know...man...

I'd just about kill for *most* of the stuff in his case.  Namely the Dread/G, Clashes, Sleipnirs, and E=mc2.

I miss my YYR.

There's a ton of new stuff on yoyorecreation's store. There is the new Mr. Butcher (Hiroyasu Ishihara), Z-On (Sojun Miyamura), and the 6 (Takahiro Iizuka, I also really like the engraving on it. There's also the overdrive + 2, along with the blink + 2 and e=mc2 + 2

The description for all the +2 models says that there are no plans to produce more... Makes me want to cop one of the Overdrive+2s... Except...

I wonder why they did this. The last run of Sleipnirs are heavier than older runs, but this was not stated anywhere. These weight differences kind of make me wonder about where these are produced, to be honest... What reason is there to mess with weights on established models, except in cases where overwhelming complaints about them being too light have been voiced? The E = MC2+2 (that looks pretty funny) is 70g... I imagine it being pretty brick-like. I imagine an additional 2 grams making the Overdrive even more of a killer than it currently is, however.

I'm a little dissatisfied with my last Sleipnir, because of the weight discrepancy, which is where this is all coming from. The reason why I felt comfortable paying ¥14,800 for another Sleipnir is because the specs on the old ones, to me, are perfect. And they changed it, without saying anything. A little dodgy to me. Just my (+).02.

It's that they ruined the last run again and instead of assuming what they did, they made it a "special edition"

Nah, I think it's about time they came out with something cheaper. With this and the 4A yoyo, it's nice to see them at least trying to break into a different demographic. i.e. not 200$ ridiculously good 1a/3a/5a throws. I wanna see 2a loopers next, does anyone on their team compete in 2a?

Since when does the idea of a metal yoyo manufacturer making a plastic yoyo belong exclusively to Adegle? It doesn't look like a PSG/Asteroid in any way (thank god for that).

Wish I had gone to JN... Traveling, even within Japan, isn't cheap. :-\

When people want a cheaper yoyorecreation yoyo I'm sure it wasn't plastic they wanted. While I love plastic as well most yoyoers won't even look at anythig plastic. In my opinion I would like to see a metal that's actually cheap. By cheap of course I mean (100-120). Maybe make something from 6061 instead 7075 which should bring the price down a bit. I love YYRs but I've only had a couple since they are so expensive and I would love to play more, especially these new ones. I like that they are doing different shapes now instead of the same shape on every yoyo.

What is their identity? Making amazing yoyos, yes. I would say a very high majority of yoyos on the market are made of 6061 and those are amazing yoyos as well. Why not try to reach to a different fan base who want great yoyos but at a more affordable price. There are many companies who cater to expensive and affordable prices and they are doing very well I would say

YYR has grown developping the philosophy of producing the best performing yoyos ever, which I believe they manage to do. This has always been their identity, and this is why their yoyos sell out so easily, even at 190$. You can't reproach Ferrari not to produce family cars. It's important to have a company thaty sells exclusively luxury items.

But they're not luxury items, don't fool yourself, aren't there rumors going around about them being made in China by and large(not that there's anything wrong with this), and haven't they had issues with vibe, ano, and weight discrepancies lately(+2 models)? Plenty of throws for less that have none of those issues. The only reason YYRs cost $190 here is because of a Yen that's at multi-year highs, not because they're some ultra-premium product. In Japan, where most YYR are sold, they're priced pretty much like most other throws, slightly higher than some, slightly less than others, but not the huge discrepancy we see here. I would argue that their yoyos don't sell out easily at $190 because there's lots that have been available at that price from American stores that haven't moved. They sell out fast at 14,800 yen, but that's completely different. The feelings you have for YYR are easily explained by economics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good) .

Not hating, i've owned 5 YYRs, i just laugh when people put them on some pedestal as if no other company could possibly achieve the same thing.
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread

BUT the fact is that they cost 190$, whatever issues there can be.

What I keep hearing is: 'Oh! I would love to get one of those  YYR yoyos, but they are too expensive' (which is often: 'because they are too expensive') you feel often proud to claim that you own a few YYR yoyos, because it involves a lot of other things. But you it's not that often you will hear: 'Hey! You know what? I managed to pick two (insert any company that produces yoyos from 5$ to 150$)  yoyos!'It clearly doesn't have the same impact. That's why I call them luxury item.

Yes you can laugh, but those people you're laughing at are basically similar to those who are fond of YYF, C3, CLYW etc...

The question is not: 'Is this item worth its price?', it is: 'Do you feel like this item is worth its price?'

Of course it can easily be explained by economics. But it only has an importance if you're a manufacturer. A manufacturer must produce thinking with his brain, a buyer must buy thinking with his heart. This is the only way for both parts to be fully satisfied :) And that's why some people can only be satisfied with excessively expensive items.

YYR are definitely a luxury brand, flaws or not. Them being a Veblen good is part of what makes them a luxury item.

Even in Japan they're more expensive than basically any non-Japanese brand, including luxury American brands such as CLYW and Anti-Yo. The Japanese could easily buy the cheaper foreign brands, which are widely available, but presumably choose to pay the YYR premium for similar reasons to those outside Japan. If there's some other reason for YYRs popularity in Japan I'd love to hear it from someone actually personally familiar with the Japanese scene.

It played ok with the slim bearing, but when I swapped that out for the normal bearing, it just doesn't play very well. Protostar blows it away, in case anybody's wondering.

Would really like to get my hands on a YYR. Love the shape of them.

However, I have no clue what to get. So I figured I would ask here. :)

I really liked the VsNYYC SKywalker, It had this feel to it. Not sure if it was a solid feel or a floaty feel. (I'm kind of an idiot, not sure which is considered which) The chief had some of that feel. So which YYR would be best suited for me? I prefer full sized. I also liked the Gen-Yo KLR.

Basically what I'm asking is what YYR plays like a Skywalker. hehe.

Edit: So I decided to take a closer look at the highspeedyoyo review on the Skywalker, apparently it's light and floaty? I really love that feel. Now I'm just wondering what YYR is like that.

EDIT: Nice collection up there!

For the qualities you love, I share the sentiment.   My favorite YYR for the longest duration has been the Sleipnir.   It's full sized, not too heavy, and  has a certain degree of the floaty feel you describe,

Nuance, however, varies the Skywalker from any YYR.   The best answer I can give, to your stated question, would be to find a Sleipnir.   Not easy to find - but worth the effort.

Acrophobia probably fits, too.   Blink and Fragment, if they met your full size criterion.

Respectfully,
Bud

Thanks. I don't really mind undersized, I know I love the Hatrick. Oversized is just a bonus. The Sleipnir looks like just my thing. The shape of the fragment looks great, I love the sort of concave v shape, but I'm worried about the well being of my hands with it. The blink also looks great, though. In fact, they all look great. Hm. Lucky for me, I just spent all my yoyo money on a Chief. I got a feeling someday I'm gonna have to buy all of these. Also, for the silver color of YYRs, are they raw or clear anodized?
Title: Re: YoYoRecreation/44re:creation appreciation/collection thread
Post by: attybud on July 27, 2012, 12:31:30 AM
If undersized would work for you, the YYR 6 is a wonderful, light throw.

If you consider OVERsized a bonus, the Overdrive meets your criteria, as does the Dreadnaught.  I am carrying Sunny's old silver (clear ano) Dreadnaught (the regular, lighter version - as opposed to the DreadnaughtG) a lot recently.

Respecting your last question, with YYRs, the term, "silver," means there is clear ano and engravings.  Raw YYRs are typically called just that.

Brother, who could blame ya for investing in your Chief!  Man - what a fine throw!

Respectfully,
Bud
